Benefits
Mulching earns its place in a bed by saving water, holding back weeds, and protecting roots from winter cold, and a fresh layer finishes the look.

Questions
Mulch is due when the layer looks thin or packed down, soil shows through, or weeds push up through the bed. Pine bark and pine needle mulches typically last about 2 to 4 years, and wood chips often break down within 2 years. Spring, before weed seeds sprout, is the usual time to refresh established beds, while fall is the season for lawn aeration and overseeding. Seasonal cleanups through lawn care include leaf removal and weeding.
Most beds do best with 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone, and coarse bark nuggets can go up to about 4 inches. Deeper layers can smother roots. Keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and off the foundation and lowest siding, because piled mulch traps moisture against bark and can hide termite activity.
Mulch type, color, delivery distance, site access, and removing old mulch all change the price, and bed size sets the cubic yards needed. One cost guide (Lawn Love, October 2026) puts installed mulch at about $72 to $87 per cubic yard nationally. Bigger beds need more material, whether the bed belongs to residential landscaping work or commercial landscaping work.
Both work well, and the choice comes down to look and location. Pine straw, also called pine needles, interlocks and stays put on slopes, and it does not acidify soil more than other mulches. Pine bark and shredded hardwood suppress weeds, and shredded hardwood resists washing away.
Usually not. Landscape fabric under mulch can become as weedy as bare soil as the mulch breaks down, and it does not control perennial weeds. A 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch does more to hold back weeds. Weeds in lawns and shrubs can be treated through lawn spraying.
