Why Choose Us

In the Area
Inside Charlotte city limits, any North Carolina native tree 30 inches or more across at 4.5 feet up, except ash, is a heritage tree protected on private lots at all times. Removing one takes a city permit and a $500 payment per tree, called mitigation by the city, with at least one replacement tree, under the Charlotte Tree Manual of April 2024. Measure the trunk and get the permit before a saw starts.

Questions
For a heritage tree, the city measures the protected root zone at one foot of radius per inch of trunk width, with a no-disturbance zone of at least 10 feet around the base, under the Charlotte Tree Manual of April 2024. Digging, trenching, and grade changes over 4 inches in that zone need a permit on trees preserved under development rules. A bed redesign near a heritage tree can fall inside that zone.
The city asks owners to keep grass under 12 inches tall and to maintain grass and vegetation all the way to the curb, with fines starting at $150.
City curbside collection takes leaves and grass in paper bags or containers no larger than 32 gallons, and plastic bags, including compostable ones, are refused. Limbs must be no longer than 5 feet and no thicker than 4 inches, and stumps are not collected. Early set-out can draw a citation of at least $150, so wait until the day before pick-up.
A heritage tree that is an imminent hazard, expected to fail within about two weeks, can come down without a permit. The owner or contractor must then send the city a tree-risk assessment from an arborist, or pictures, video, and a witness statement, within three days. Missing that deadline can bring permit fees, a mitigation payment, and civil penalties, under the Charlotte Tree Manual of April 2024. Photograph the tree first.
